When you take ownership of this flare, you must play it and lose one of your colonies (ships return to other colonies). This does not count towards any limits on playing flares. When this card is discarded, unless it was zapped it must be given to another player instead.

You may wait until after encounter cards are selected but before they are revealed to declare an upset (voiding the requirement to play attack cards).

As a main player, before encounter cards are selected, you may declare that both sides lose, sending all involved ships to the warp.
Super
You may wait until after cards are selected but before they are revealed before declaring an upset. When you do so, you and your opponent are not required to play attack cards if possible.

Loser is an alien that can use its power to reverse the outcome of an encounter. While the power has to be declared before encounter cards are selected, it can be devastating when used properly.

Strategy[]

Strengths Weaknesses
Winner loses and loser wins Likely target for offensive artifacts (Cosmic Zaps, Plagues, etc)

As Loser[]

The Loser's job is to lose. Increase your odds of winning by increasing your chances of losing.

Try to "lose" the encounter launching only a single ship, utilizing a low encounter card and not inviting any allies.

If you are unsuccessful in creating an upset, or simply do not wish to utilize your power, continue play as normal and rely on high cards.

The Loser is very effective against aliens whose powers increase their payload, such as Human, Virus, etc.

Against Loser[]

Similar to Filch, Anti-Matter, etc, simply not playing high cards against the Loser allows one to avoid its power.

Use Reinforcements to add on his total to make him "win" (i.e. lose) the encounter.

Use artifacts such as Cosmic Zap to prevent him from using his powers, or Plague him to keep his ships or hand in control.

Individual strategies[]

Mirror: Try to mirror the cards if he declared an upset (e.g. a 06 will backfire with 60).

Trader: Trade with him when you have high cards and use your lowest cards whenever possible. Subsequently, trading hands with other players gives them the opportunity to have lower cards to gain a slight advantage over Loser.

Heavy hitters such as Virus, Warrior, Macron, etc.: Try to draw from the reward deck, as you can make use of kickers and negative attack cards.

CEO You have the power of upset. When you are main alien in an encounter, you may declare an upset before pods are launched. At the appropriate time both aliens must launch an attack pod if possible. If an upset is declared, the winning side loses and the losing side wins. The enigmatic Losers have proved to be quite cunning in battle. Strengths become weaknesses and weaknesses strengths as the Loser shows its opponents that nice guys finish first.
FFG You have the power of Upset. As a main player, before encounter cards are selected, you may use this power to declare an upset. Once an upset has been declared, both main players must play attack cards, if possible. Then, after cards are revealed, the winning side loses and the losing side wins. This occurs after all other game effects are resolved (such as Human's power being zapped). The enigmatic Losers have proven to be quite cunning in battle. Strengths become weaknesses and weaknesses become strengths as the glassy-eyed Loser shows his opponents that nice guys finish first.
